Can kettlebell exercises be done with dumbbells?

Yes. Kettlebell exercises can be done with dumbbells.

The truth is that kettlebells are just a tool for reaching a set of exercise goals. People who make the kettlebells the focal point, rather than the exercise goals, get fixated on the implement instead of on what it can do for them.

When you hear someone talk about "kettlebell exercises", they're acknowledging that kettlebells are an awkward workout implement that requires you to modify standard exercise technique in order to get it to work.

Ways to do kettlebell exercises with dumbbells

For the most part, movements favored by kettlebell users can be transferred to dumbbells with no modification. But here are some tips to help you make the transition:

  • Two-handed swings work fine with dumbbells. But you need to grab the weight plate instead of grabbing the handle. One-handed swings are, of course, performed by grabbing the handle. This is a better move with dumbbells than it is with kettlebells.

  • Snatches are easier, safer, and more efficient with a dumbbell. You can start the move from the floor, or from a hang.

  • Cleans with a dumbbell are slightly different. Instaed of resting the weight the way you would with a kettlebell, just balance it over your shoulder.

Virtually anything you can do with a kettlebell can be done easier, safer, and more efficiently with a dumbbell.
